without the hassle of having to move it and make new holes, here’s the answer - and it really works!

Cocktail sticks carefully snapped and pushed into the offending hole will give your screw what it needs to bite onto something and hold tightly again.

You can even do this if you happen to drill a hole too big at the start of a job.

Pop the wall plug in the hole and then use the cocktail/match sticks to make sure it is nice and tight in the hole.

Give it a gentle tap with a hammer

The hole is now good to use for your shelf bracket or whatever it is you are hanging.

If it is just a hole that has become too big but doesn't have a wall plug, in wood for example, use the cocktail sticks directly in the hole and the screw will bite onto that just fine.
